Final Conference Logistics

Building a Democratic City: The 2nd International Conference on Participatory Budgeting in the US and Canada begins this Friday. We’re excited to welcome participants from 15 countries to Chicago. Thank you for your overwhelming interest!

As you prepare for the conference, please review the following important information:

Locations:

Friday’s Opening Plenary, The People’s Budget: Participatory Budgeting in Mexico, New York, and Chicago will take place at 7pm at Madero Middle School, 3202 West 28th Street. Political leaders from Mexico and New York will share two of the most exciting experiences with participatory budgeting in North America. This public event will be in Spanish and English, and light refreshments will be provided. To get to the school by public transit, take the Pink Line Subway to Kedzie-Cermak, and either walk South on S Kedzie Ave for 18 minutes, or take the 52 bus which runs along S Kedzie.

All Saturday and Sunday conference sessions will be held at the Damen Student Center, 6511 N Sheridan Road, at Loyola University’s Lake Shore Campus.

Saturday’s tours of PB Chicago Voting Sites will take place at locations across the city, and will leave from the Damen Center at 11:30am. When you sign-in at registration on Saturday morning, you will be asked to pick which Ward you want to visit.

Please see the conference locations page for a searchable googlemap that you can use to coordinate your travel, and a Loyola Campus map to help you reach the Damen Center.

If you will be arriving by car, please note that there are parking garages at Loyola, and free parking on many of the smaller streets nearby. Metered spots are also free from 9pm-7am on most major streets. The Damen Center is across the street from a subway station, so we encourage you to take transit.

Registration:

Please arrive at the Damen Student Center at 9:00am on Saturday to sign-in, pick up your registration package, and enjoy breakfast (included). If you have not yet registered, please do so as soon as possible.

Food:

Registration includes light refreshments at Friday’s Opening Plenary, breakfast and light evening refreshments on Saturday, and breakfast and lunch on Sunday. For other meals, please see a list of recommended restaurants near the conference locations.

Program and Site Visits:

You can review the conference program here. On Saturday, participants will have the opportunity to observe voting for PB Chicago. You will need to sign-up for a site visit at the conference registration table on Saturday morning, and group size will be limited at each location.Ā Volunteers will lead groups to voting locations (all tours will leave from the registration area at the Damen Center at 11:30am), but you may also travel alone. Public transit directions will be provided in your registration package.

Presentations:

With the exception of the PB Chicago Voting Site Visits, the briefing, and plenaries, all conference sessions are scheduled to last for 1 hour and 30 minutes. Most will be a mix of presentations and discussion and will have ample time for questions and answers, in which participants are welcome to share their own experiences.

Have a safe and pleasant trip to Chicago and we look forward to seeing you in a few days!
